A Brief History of Coaching:
Since its inception, coaching has gradually been evolving into the mainstream discipline it has become today. While it’s more popular than ever, it has not been on a linear trajectory and has taken a while to enter the mainstream.
Starting in the early nineties, as a product of his book ‘Coaching for Performance, John Whitmore was one of the people who introduced coaching to the world. He defined coaching as ‘unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their performance,’ further clarifying that ‘it is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.’ Thomas Leonard is also often considered one of the forefathers of coaching as he founded ‘Coach-U’ in 1992, the first formal coaching programme which trained coaches. He also established the International Coaching Federation, which is still functioning today.
